CLASSIFICATION OF SIGNIFICANT WATER RESOURCES IN THE MVOTI TO UMZIMKULU WATER MANAGEMENT AREA Presented by: Mmaphefo Thwala Scientist Production Water Resource Classification 16 September 2015 PRESENTATION TITLE Presented by: Name Surname Directorate Date Project Steering Committee Meeting 6
PURPOSE OF PRESENTATION • To reflect on the overall purpose of classifying water resources • To provide an overview on the study and reflect on the objectives of the study • To highlight progress made to date in achieving those objectives
The purpose of classifying water resources • To ensure protection of water resources: • For different uses of water (domestic, industrial, agricultural etc.); • To maintain good human health & the health of those living organisms (plants, animals, microbes etc.) existing in the water; • For meeting basic human needs (drinking, bathing, cooking etc.). • To set achievable protection measures by Classifying and determining the Reserve and Resource Quality Objectives (RQOs)
Communities are ultimately most affected by conditions of our water resources Current situation in majority of KZN communities Polluted resources Water tankers Community members
Overview of the Mvoti to Umzimkulu Classification Project • 36 months study: July 2012 – June 2015; extended to October 2015 to incorporate stakeholder input • DWS through the professional services of Rivers for Africa • The objectives of the study: • Determination of the Reserve • Water for human well-being and aquatic ecosystem • Water resources categorized into Water Resource Classes • facilitate the balance between protection and use of the water resources; • is defined by taking into account the social, economic & ecological factors • Resource Quality Objectives (RQOs) set • Requirements to satisfy the ecology (biological, chemical, physical attributes) • Numerical and/or narrative descriptive statements of conditions which should be met in the receiving water resource
Project Outcomes To Date • Integrated Units of Analysis (IUAs) delineated • Status Quo (ecology, economy, ecosystem services, water quantity and quality) established • Catchment Visioning conducted • Ecological Water Requirements (EWRs) determined • Operational Scenarios (management options) evaluated • Additional wastewater scenarios (eThekwini, Ilembe & Ugu) assessed • Proposed Water Resource Classes • Resource Quality Objectives (RQOs)
STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT • 5 Project Steering Committee (PSC) meetings to date • 5 Technical Working Group Meetings (TWGs) meetings to date • 18 Catchment Management Forums (CMFs) • Upper uMngeni • Upper Mvoti • Lower Mvoti and Kwadukuza • Msunduzi • Lower Mngeni • Mzimayi • Inanda • Isipingo • 4 Community HDI Groups • 13 Sector meetings • Municipalities • Sappi LAF • DEA
