  3. Shem – Many consider him the eldest of Noah's because he is the first mentioned of the sons of Noah (Gen 5:32; 6:10) although some would say he is the middle son. Japheth – Considered to be the second son. Those that say he is the oldest base it on Gen 10:21 (Japheth the elder) If so, he was born in the 500th year of his father's age (Gen 5:32), and consequently was 100 years old at the commencement of the flood, which occurred in Noah's 600th year. Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown Commentary The true rendering of Gen 10:21 is, 'the oldest brother of Japheth’ Ham –regarded as the youngest of the three brothers by Josephus (also Bochart, Gesenius, Furst, and Delitzsch) but others conclude, from his being always mentioned between the other two, that he was the second son of Noah. 4. Gen 5:32 And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth. The first nine patriarchs of the primitive world propagated their race at the mean or average term of the 100th year of their lives whereas Noah was 500 years old (Genesis 5:32) Gen 5:32, 6:10Did Noah Have Other Family? www.sharongospelchapel.org - Lesson 24 - May 27, 2012

  5. Shem -- "dark”; “a name”, “renown” It is considered possible that Shem may be the usual Hebrew word for "name" (shem), given him because he was the firstborn-a parallel to the Assyr-Babylonian usage Ham -- Egyptian word meaning “black”; “hot”, “heat”, “brown” One of the most important facts recorded in Gen 10 is the foundation of the earliest monarchy in Babylonia by Nimrod the grandson of Ham. The primitive Babylonian empire was thus Hamitic, and allied by blood with the primitive inhabitants of Arabia and of Ethiopia. Japheth The root "to make wide”; enlargement. Japheth may also mean "fair, “being all more or less white-skinned if the other children’s names refer to their color. Albright (leadng authority on archaeology of the Near East and not a believer in the infallibility of Scripture) concerning the Table of Nations in Genesis 10 and 11: “It stands absolutely alone in ancient literature, without a romote parallel, even among the Greeks, where we find the closest approach to a distribution of peoples in genealogical framework… The Table of nations remains and astonishing accurate document” Biblical FoundationsTable of NAtions – Genesis 10-11 www.sharongospelchapel.org - Lesson 24 - May 27, 2012

  8. Shem is traditionally held to be the ancestor of the Semitic people; Religious Jews and Arabs consider themselves sons of Shem through Arphaxhad (thus, Semites). In the view of some 17th century European scholars (e.g., John Webb), the people of China and India descended from him as well. 12. 2 Peter 3:3-7 3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, 4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. 5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: 6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: 7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. 13. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniformitarianism Uniformitarianism is the assumption that the same natural laws and processes that operate in the universe now, have always operated in the universe in the past and apply everywhere in the universe. It has included the gradualistic concept that "the present is the key to the past" and is functioning at the same rates. Uniformitarianism has been a key principle of geology, Uniformitarianism was originally proposed in contrast to catastrophism, which states that the distant past "consisted of epochs of paroxysmal and catastrophic action interposed between periods of comparative tranquility" Especially in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, most geologists took this interpretation to mean that catastrophic events are not important in geologic time; The current consensus is that Earth's history is a slow, gradual process punctuated by occasional natural catastrophic events that have affected Earth and its inhabitants Biblical FoundationsWas There a World-Wide Flood?: 1. Isa 54:9 For this is as the waters of Noah unto me: for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth; Ezek 14:14 Though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, saith the Lord God. Heb 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. 1 Peter 3:20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. 2 Peter 2:5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly; Biblical FoundationsWas There a World-Wide Flood?: 2. Matt 24:37 37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, 39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
