Rob Di Cristoforo, Advantia Transport Consulting Teaching old dogsnew tricks
Before PBS: Same footprint, different mass • General access: • 19m B-double 50.5 t • 19m truck and dog 50.5 t(Less in some states) • B-double access: • 19m B-double 57.5 t • Dogs went hungry • Safety reasons
After PBS • General access 50.5 tonnes • B-double access 57.5 tonnes • As long as certain requirements met • e.g. Bin height limit • Can these weights be introduced generally, without PBS approval?
Typical template - dimensions These dimensions are not critical!
Typical template – bin height • Bin height limits necessary • Level 1 – High Speed Transient Offtracking • Level 2 – Rearward Amplification • Suspensions and tyres • Broader range works for lower bin height • Narrower range works for higher bin height • Up to 2.85 m typical for quarry work with a good range of suspensions
Managing risk • Many non-PBS vehicles do not meetPBS standards • A prescriptive approach should not require 100% certainty of meeting standards • We should be satisfied with vehicles ‘probably’ meeting the standards
Proposal - dimensions • Key longitudinal dimensions to be within broad specified ranges • 2.85 m height limit • Bridge formulae • No need for further constraint
Proposal – suspensions, tyres • Suspensions • Certified RFS all positions except steer • Tyres • No conditions
Proposal – truck specs • 6.5 tonne steer axle requirements • Emissions ADR 80/01 (Euro IV) or later • FUPD UN ECE Reg 93 • Cab strength UN ECE Reg 29 • ABS or EBS • Minimum 410 HP
Proposal – trailer specs • EBS with roll stability
National policy development • Should commence ASAP • Should involve: • PBS Assessors • PBS Certifiers • Truck and trailer manufacturers • End users • Not road authorities
