A Life Aquatic: How Data is Collected, How it Used and How You Can Do It Too Presentation to Ballard High School Dr. Carol Ladd, Dr. Ned Cokelet and Dr. Phyllis Stabeno 07 June 2007
What We Will Do for the next 30 Minutes • What’s it like to be at sea? • What instruments do scientists use at sea? • What data is collected at sea? • What do we do with the data? What does it tell us? • You too can be part of this – there are a lot of people involved!
Why the Bering Sea?(not because we like “The Deadliest Catch” • Originally (1984) • Study the relationship between the marine environment and fish (pollock) • In the 90’s • Study the relationship between the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska ecosystem and marine resources.
What do we do when we get there? Deploy Drifters to track currents Deploy Bongos to sample small critters
What do we do when we get there? CTD Setup CTD Deployment CTD Sampling Deploy Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) instruments to sample water properties
The Weather is Here… The Bridge windows are @ 35 feet above the waterline!
What do these instruments do?Drifters How currents flow at different times
What do these instruments do?Bongos # and types of fish larvae present in different places and times
What do these instruments do?CTD’s What the water is like in different places
When you can’t have a ship, have a mooring! Observations in one place over time
Putting it all together: What story does the data tell? Is it getting warmer in the Bering Sea?
2005 2006 Putting it all together: What story does the data tell? Conditionson the Eastern Bering Sea ShelfMay 2005 - September 2006 Two distinct regions of the Bering Sea
Putting it all together: What story does the data tell? Currents affect where larvae go, which affects how many make it to adulthood, which affects how many fish can be caught!
Back to You: How can you be a part of this? Officers Cooks Scientists Survey Techs Electronic Techs Engineers Fisherman
