Why Is It Needed? The new WIC Food Packages are still evolving We continue to: • learn what foods participants prefer • learn what foods vendors are able to stock • see an influx of new products and re-formulations as manufacturers are learning the requirements • have name changes
Cereal New (all are whole grain): Kellogg's: • Corn Flakes Simply Cinnamon • Frosted Mini-Wheat Bite Size: Touch of Fruit in the Middle • Gluten-Free Rice Krispies Malt-O-Meal: • Blueberry Mini-Spooners B&G: • Instant Healthy Grain Cream of Wheat – Original (in packets)
Cereal (cont.) Deleted: Kellogg's: • Corn Flakes Touch of Honey Quaker: • King Vitaman
Breads, Buns & Rolls New 16 oz breads: • Nature’s Own 100% Whole Wheat Bread with Honey • Kroger 100% Whole Wheat Name changes: • Earthgrains 100% Natural Whole Wheat Thin Buns has become Sara Lee 100% Whole Wheat Thin Style Buns • Pepperidge Farms Very Thin Sliced Soft 100% Whole Wheat Bread is now renamed Very Thin Sliced 100% Whole Wheat Bread
Juice New 64 oz: • Langer Apple Juice • Welch’s Red Grape Juice Deleted 46 oz: • Campbell’s V-8 100% Vegetable Juice – Spicy Hot
Cheese New: Cabot: • In 8 oz blocks • Only when Kosher or Halal cheese is requested at the time Food Instrument (FI) is issued
Soy Beverage New: 8th Continent: • Vanilla Tofu New: Nasoya: • Extra Firm • Firm Tofu Plus Deleted: Nasoya: • Cubed Super Firm
Canned Beans For purchase only with FIs: Any brand and variety of plain beans (15 oz – 16 oz) Can: • have added salt and sugar • be labeled reduced sodium Cannot: • have added meat, sauces or spices • be labeled organic
Fruits & Vegetables Three clarifications, the changes are in bold: Can: • buy fresh whole & cut fruits and vegetables without added sugars, fats, oils, herbs or spices • buy frozen whole & cut fruits and vegetables without added sugars, fats, oils, herbs or spices Cannot : • buy herbs or spices (bundled or packaged)
