  6. Classes of Nutrients • Water • Protein • Carbohydrates • Minerals • Vitamins • Fat

  7. Water • Largest component of nearly all living things • Solution in which all nutrients are dissolved or suspended for transport • Reacts with compounds to break down food into products that can be used

  8. Protein • Main component of muscles and tissues • Made out of amino acids • Used continuously • Major sources include soybeans, peanuts, cottonseed, and linseed • Oil meal

  9. Carbohydrates • Sugars and starches • Provide energy and heat • Energy obtained is used for growth, maintenance, work, reproduction, and lactation • Sugars (simple and compound) • Found in plant materials • Corn, wheat, barley, oats, and rye

  10. Minerals • Many functions: • Skeleton • Soft tissue and fluids • 15 minerals that are essential to animal health: • Calcium, phosphorus, sodium, chlorine, potassium, sulfur, iron, iodine, cobalt, copper, fluorine, manganese, molybdenum, selenium, zinc

  11. Vitamins • Available in roughages and concentrates • Catalysts for body processes • Part of normal feeds of animals

  12. Fat • Improves palatability, flavor, texture, and energy levels • Increase milk production and fatten meat animals
