Nutrient A chemical element or compound that aids in the support of life.
Classes of Nutrients • Water • Protein • Carbohydrates • Minerals • Vitamins • Fat
Water • Largest component of nearly all living things • Solution in which all nutrients are dissolved or suspended for transport • Reacts with compounds to break down food into products that can be used
Protein • Main component of muscles and tissues • Made out of amino acids • Used continuously • Major sources include soybeans, peanuts, cottonseed, and linseed • Oil meal
Carbohydrates • Sugars and starches • Provide energy and heat • Energy obtained is used for growth, maintenance, work, reproduction, and lactation • Sugars (simple and compound) • Found in plant materials • Corn, wheat, barley, oats, and rye
Minerals • Many functions: • Skeleton • Soft tissue and fluids • 15 minerals that are essential to animal health: • Calcium, phosphorus, sodium, chlorine, potassium, sulfur, iron, iodine, cobalt, copper, fluorine, manganese, molybdenum, selenium, zinc
Vitamins • Available in roughages and concentrates • Catalysts for body processes • Part of normal feeds of animals
Fat • Improves palatability, flavor, texture, and energy levels • Increase milk production and fatten meat animals
Quiz • What is a nutrient? • List 3 of the classes of nutrients. • Name 2 minerals that are essential to animal health.
