  3. Rate- a ratio that compares two quantities with different kinds of units

  4. Unit Rate- a rate that has a denominator of 1 unit

  5. Example 1 Jake can type a 15- character text message in 5 seconds. 1- What is his rate of typing? 2- At this rate, how many characters can he type in 10 seconds? 3 words per second Jake can type 30 words in 10 seconds.

  6. ÷5 1,000 words 200 words ______________ _____________ 5 minutes 1 minute = ÷5 Example 2 Lawren reads 1,000 words in 5 minutes. Write this rate as a unit rate. Lawren can read 200 words every minute

  7. ÷18 $216 $12 ___________ __________ = 18 hours 1 hour ÷18 Example 3 Megan earned $216 baby sitting last week. If she worked 18 hours, how much was she paid per hour? Megan was paid $12 per hour.

  9. Step 2 Using the unit rate for each, determine the number of beats in 60 minutes. A cat’s heart beats 120 × 60 or 7,200 beats in 60 minutes. A horse’s heart beats 44 × 60 or 2,640 beats in 60 minutes. Step 3 Find the difference. 7,200 – 2,640 = 4,560 Acat’s heart beats 4,560 more times in60 minutes than a horse’s heart.
