He brought about convenience and speed in writing. He invented a system of shorthand, which was far more recognized in the past than it is now. Pitman was born in Trowbridge, the U.K. in 1813. He became interested in phonography, a means of spelling based on phonetics. He invented a system of shorthand officially called Pitman Shorthand in 1837. He set forth a shorthand system based on phonetic rather than orthographic principles. In 1837, Isaac Pitman first published his system of phonetic shorthand in a pamphlet. Among the examples in this pamphlet were the Psalm 100 and the Lord’s Prayer. Through his own publishing house, he published many manuals, journals, and books about shorthand. He was applauded by the press and business since his shorthand proved to be a timesaving boon for reporters and secretaries. His stenographic system became one of the most-used systems in the world. He sent his brother Benn to the U.S. in 1853 to establish a shorthand institute in Cincinnati, Ohio. Ben introduced Pitman’s system there, and used it in the 1865-67 trial of the conspirators behind the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. He was knighted in 1894 three years before his death. He died in 1897. His epitaph reads, “His aims were steadfast,his mind original, his work prodigious, the achievement world-wide.
