Vietnam Draft All men ages 18-26 had to apply for the draft and in a time of war could be called upon to perform military services Draft dodging was common as many people opposed the war Men escaped draft by getting medical exceptions, changing residencies, joining National Guard and Coast Guard, going to college or burning their draft cards It was much easier for wealthy men to dodge the draft while those of lower economic levels had no choice to go
Protests During the Democratic Convention protesters gathered against Hubert Humphrey were attacked by Chicago police officers The chant “the world is watching” means that as police officers beat the demonstrators while they were filmed by television cameras
1968 Presidential Election Lyndon Johnson decides not to run for reelection because of the war in Vietnam and the Tet Offensive Robert Kennedy was against Vietnam because he felt that US involvemnet in Vietnam was now doing more harm than good and should be settled with diplomacy Robert Kennedy wins the California Democratic Primary in 1968 and on his way out, after giving his victory speech, is shot and killed by Sirhan Sirhan Robert Kennedy
1968 Presidential Election cont. Hubert Humprhey is Democratic Candidate, Johnson’s Vice President favors Vietnam war Richard Nixon is Republican Candidate, opposed to war in Vietnam George Wallace runs as American Independent, Democrat in favor of Vietnam war Nixon wins election with 301 electoral votes
