Technology Serving Humanity All Engineering Studies Freshmen should be pre-enrolled for Spring 2009 courses. “Normal” Schedule: CM 132 Chemistry II PH132 Physics II MA132 Calculus II SAS 101 – need a KA course* ES 100 – Intr. Engrg. Use Comp. All you have to do is select a KA/UC course. * We will discuss this in a moment

Technology Serving Humanity • Not your schedule? • Honors Program • AP or Transfer Credits so you are already taking some of those courses. • HP students should be enrolled in HP 101 + HP 103 instead of SAS 101. You should also meet with Dr. Craig for academic advising before finalizing your enrollment. • Karen Burkum (Registrar) and I may have substituted other courses based on your likely needs. We should review these to see if they are the right ones.

Today we will discuss Knowledge Area Courses, (KA/Univ), Communications Points and the Professional Experience Requirement

Technology Serving Humanity Knowledge Areas (KAs): Cultures and Societies (CSO) Contemporary and Global Issues (CGI) Imaginative Arts (IA) Science, Technology, and Society (STS) Economics and Organizations (EC) Individual and Group Behavior (IG) Also Common Experience University Courses (UNIV) – have two or more knowledge areas designated The knowledge area requirement is met by completing six KAs in a minimum of five courses (so at least one University Course).

Technology Serving Humanity The Communication Component Courses designated as communication intensive are assigned communication points on a scale of one or two (C1 or C2) to indicate the extent of communication experience in that course. Beyond the Clarkson Seminar UNIV 190 (a C2 course), students must obtain six more “communication points,” at least two of them within the major at the 300/400 level. Communication points can be obtained by taking designated courses, or, with approval, through co-curricular experiences.

Examples: Complete a meaningful internship or co-op, research project with a qualified mentor, role with significant responsibility on a SPEED team or significant design project, serve as a leader in a professional or community service organization …

  8. Technology Serving Humanity How do I know if an experience qualifies? It has to meet the educational objectives of the Professional Experience Requirement (see the document). There is a PRE-APPROVAL WORKSHEET. After completion – COMPLETION WORKSHEET & POST-EXPERIENCE SELF ASSESSMENT must be completed and approved. If approved, you can get credit for ES 499.

  9. Technology Serving Humanity Each major will have slightly different approaches. Most will encourage doing this in the Jr./Sr. year time frame, but there will be exceptions. It is never too early to start planning.

  10. Technology Serving Humanity There are other Common Experience requirements that you can discuss later with your major advisor. If anyone wants to change majors now, I have forms with me. Complete them and take them to the department administering the program you are changing to.
