  2. The Norman Invasion of England • 1066 AD • William of Normandy (France) conquers England • French and English nobility get all mixed up • Leads to the conflict of the Hundred Years’ War

How did the war begin? • War starts in 1337 • French king Philip VI tries to take English land in southern France • English king Edward III responds by claiming he is the rightful King of ALL France • His mother was sister to an earlier French • This starts 116 years of on and off war between the two countries • English successful at first but French win the war

  4. How did the nature of warfare change? • Longbows eliminated the advantages of armor • Could fire longs distances • Could pierce armor if close enough • Cannons made castles less effective • Could break down castle walls • Monarchs used armies recruited from common people • paid with MONEY • No more knights needed!

Who was Joan of Arc and how did she change the course of the war? • Young French peasant women who was inspired by God to save France • Convinced Charles VII (later French king) to let her lead an army against the English in 1429 • Inspired the French people to fight • What happened to Joan? • Was captured by the English and accused of heresy • burned at the stake in 1431 • was sainted in 1922 by the Catholic Church

  7. How did the war contribute to the end of feudalism in France? • People more devoted and patriotic to the monarch (king) • Monarchs built huge armies with the taxes they collected • New technologies make feudal war obsolete (outdated)
