  3. Authorities For the teaching profession in the U.S., there is no singular, unifying code. However, several similar codes have been drafted by such organizations as the Association of American Educators (AAE) and the National Education Association (NEA). Variations on ethical codes of conduct for teachers may also be adopted by specific state or county school boards.   4. According to the National Education Association (NEA), the professional organization and labor union for U.S. teachers, all teachers must abide by a common code of ethics. This code of ethics is broken down into two guiding principles: commitment to the student and commitment to the profession. Though individual schools can expand on this code of ethics for their teachers, they cannot revise or delete these two principles. Consequently, the NEA's code of ethics is the basis for all professional ethics standards in U.S. schools.
