  2. Question 1 • When someone is leaning toward one’s own views or outlooks, especially a personal and sometimes unreasoned judgment, it is called what? • Bias

  3. Question 2 • Name 2 ways a writer can create bias. • The writer has incomplete information. • The writer is deliberately trying to persuade the audience by showing only one side. (unbalanced) • The writer’s experience is coloring the writer’s attitude. (prejudice) • The writer uses exaggerated language (lots of big & fancy words) • The writer is trying to sell you something. • The writer is trying to produce an emotional response from you.

Question 3 • Name 2 questions you should ask yourself in order to determine if bias is present in what you’re reading. • What are the facts in the article? • What are the opinions in the article? • Looking at the opinions, what is the prevailing tone? Is it positive or negative? How do you know? • What do you know about the author of the article? • How might experiences or objectives “color” this author’s opinion? • Do you think the author intentionally uses bias to persuade, or is it unintentional? • How biased is the article? Can the writer be trusted, or is the bias too strong for a clear understanding of the topic?
