What is AMSA? • AMSA = American Medical Student Association • Founded in 1950;oldest, largest, student-run, independent national association of physicians-in-training in the United States 60,000+ members • Members range from pre-medical students, interns, and residents, to practicing physicians • AMSA is active in politics pertaining to issues of medicine & public health (ie how policies affect our future as health professionals)

5. What is UCBPB-AMSA? • Founded in January 2010 • Only post-bac chapter in the nation to be recognized with an official charter • One of the only resources outside of post-bac program-specific advising that caters to meeting the unique needs and interests of the post-bac/non-traditional student demographic • Largest student group (Among the “BIG THREE”) at UC Berkeley Extension, with 90+ members to date

27. UCSF WATCH Clinic • Weight Assessment for Teen and Child Health (WATCH) • The clinic brings together doctors, nutritionists, exercise physiologists and psychologists with expertise diagnosing and treating child obesity.

28. UCSF WATCH Clinic The clinic assists with weight management while also treating diseases related to weight, such as asthma, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. Weight management is achieved through nutrition education and behavior modification; drug and surgical therapy is considered when appropriate.

VITAS Innovative Hospice Care • VITAS – a nation-wide leading provider of hospice care • Hands-on care for hospice patients at the end of life • Provide friendly visits to patients, provide respite for their regular caretakers, and shadow nurses and clinicians • Help contribute to the comfort and dignity that patients experience at the end of life • Locations in Alameda County, Contra Costa County, Santa Clara County (offices in Newark and Walnut Creek) • 2 hour/week commitment • Flexible hours and location!

San Francisco’s Neighborhood Emergency Response Training Program – A one-time service/workshop opportunity • Designed to provide trainees with the ability to correctly respond to a disaster • In the event of a major disaster, citizens will be on their own for at least the first 72 hours as first responders will be overwhelmed.   • The goal  is to provide citizens with a working knowledge of  life-saving skills while also instilling confidence and a sense of community that provides a safety net for  a community. • Our goal is to provide AMSA members with a one to two day workshop that will help them prepare for a disaster that will inevitably happen in California’s future.

Mission Statement Provide alternatives to domestic violence through support service, advocacy and education, and to assist domestic violence victims Organization Type: 1976 Non-profit community-based organization Funding: Diverse; federal, state, local, private foundations, corporations, concerned individuals Statistics/ Track Record (Current Annual): +Answered 2400 crisis calls on their 24-hour hotline +Completed 328 Temporary Restraining Orders +Reached more than 3000 teens with our Teen Dating Violence Prevention presentations +Provided shelter to 544 women and children through our emergency shelter, subsidized housing programs, and motel vouchers +Assisted 1221 domestic violence victims with crisis intervention at local police departments

Getting involved: +Prevention Services: These services encompass our outreach and education programs to the community and schools +Intervention Services: From the moment of crisis to resolution, SAVE offers a number of services to meet the victim's immediate and short-term needs +Support Services: Recovering from the effects of domestic abuse is an ongoing and often long-term process. SAVE's support services are available to assist the victim in this process. CHORI is a children’s hospital and a biomedical research Institute based in Oakland • Leader in translational research, providing cures for diseases and discovering new treatments for previously fatal conditions • SURGERY CENTER • Provide support and anesthetic instructions for children awaiting surgery • RADIOLOGY • Learn about equipment and perform clinical tasks • EMERGENCY DEPT • Assist the medical staff and observe medical procedures • RESEARCH ASST • Assist in research at one of CHORI’s advanced laboratories

A student organization and volunteering community which offers free health and social services to underserved populations since 1989 • Mission- is to promote health and overall well being of underserved individuals • Volunteers learn how to casework with homeless and low income clients through extensive trainings • Non profit organization which provides service to low income individuals in Alameda, Contra Costa and Marin county • Provide primary health, dental care, pediatric and adult health care • Also provide treatment for HIV/AIDS
