  1. The Clown Punk Simon Armitage

  2. Starter: Write down five sentences to sum up The Clown Punk. Once you have done that, sum up each sentence into one word.

  3. Learning Objective: To use independent thinking to analyse how Simon Armitage uses different techniques in The Clown Punk.

  4. During this activity: All of you will be able to spot poetic techniques in the poem (E/D) Most of you will be able to be able to make comments on why the writer uses these techniques (C) Some of you will be able to explain why the writer has used certain words / techniques. (B)

  5. Now you are going to be put into groups. Each group is going to be allocated a leader. You are going to spend 10 minutes analysing the poem in your group and writing notes around it. Make sure you are contributing as you will be marked.

  6. You will be looking at: Similes and metaphors. Alliteration and rhyme Imagery Words Structure and punctuation. What the poet is trying to say. Similes and metaphors (2)

  7. After ten minutes, the leader is going to swap. The leader will then go to another group for five minutes and tell them what you have been doing, as well as adding new ideas.

  8. Self Assessment Grade E: I was able to spot some techniques in the poem. Grade D: I was able to spot techniques in the poem and select relevant quotations. Grade C: I was able to make comments about why the writer used techniques. Grade B: I was able to make detailed comments about why the writer used certain techniques.

  9. My target is: Grade D: to be able to chose relevant quotations. Grade C: Make some comments about how the writer uses techniques. Grade B: Make detailed comments about how and why the writer uses techniques Grade A: Use critical language to explain the writer’s choices.
