The Baltic Grid Second Phase • Started 1st of May, 2008, duration - 2 years • 13 partners from Baltic States, Belarus, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland • Continues the BalticGrid project (2005-2008) • Financing – 3 MEUR • Collaborating project for EGEE • Supporting NGIs and their collaboration Normalized computing hours for the BalticGrid project and that of the first six months of BalticGrid-II Grid Open Day, May 12, 2009 - Riga, Latvia

Why BalticGrid:Because Science needs community ✔ • Teams organized around common goals • People, resource, software, data, instruments… • With diverse membership & capabilities • Expertise in multiple areas required • And geographic and political distribution • No location/organization possesses all required skills and resources • Must adapt as a function of the situation • Adjust membership, reallocate responsibilities, renegotiate resources ✔ ✔ ✔ Grid Open Day, May 12, 2009 - Riga, Latvia

Status, challenges • Delivering according to detailed project plan, • and on time • Higher level goals are still a challenge: • - Industry engagement  BGi • - Getting towards EGI  External Advisors, EGI group • - Interoperability  Closer cooperation with EGEE (MoU), NorduGrid (MoU) and UNICORE (MoU) Grid Open Day, May 12, 2009 - Riga, Latvia

Summary – last slide • BalticGrid - continue its successful building of grid infrastructures of value to its users. • EGI - shows the way forward to a sustained grid infrastructure where NGIs are key components. • NGIs from BalticGrid – should be strongly linked together, building a good network within EGI. • The economy - of the future grid infrastructure calls for innovative solutions.
