  2. Protists • Are considered eukaryotes - organisms that have cells with nuclei. • Can be unicellular or multicellular. • Some are autotrophs (make own food) or heterotrophs (consume other organisms) • 3 categories - animal-like protists, funguslike protists and plantlike protists.

  3. Animal-like Protists • Pseudopods - temporary bulge of the cell membrane that fills with cytoplasm • Help protozoa to move in response to change in environment. • Help to trap food.

  4. Contractile vacuole - collects extra water and expels it from the cell. • Cilia - hairlike projections from cells that move with a wavelike pattern. • Used to move, obtain food, and sense the environment.

  5. Flagella - whiplike structure that helps the protist move.

  6. Plantlike Protists • Commonly called algae. • Algae is an autotroph.
