Study guidelines • Begin with the right kind of thinking. Learning should be fun and inspiring, especially English, a subject that isn't about "right" or "wrong" answers but about responses, ideas, and questions. English is the place that rewards independence and risk. That said: • Read everything. Read everything slowly. Read everything twice. Annotate as you read. See How and Why to Annotate a Book. • If class doesn't show you how better to understand the text, then you need more sleep. • Be active in class. Follow the discussion. Annotate your text. Take notes. Ask questions. Make comments. Class is more than class. It's practice. • Writing top-notch essays takes time. Give yourself plenty. • Don't like the grades you're getting on essays? Start work early and show me drafts while you work. • Cornell Notes • http://voldingenglish.com/study.html
