Poetry has.. Emotions Images Rhythms
Poetry evokes emotions in the reader • A poem makes you feel happy, sad, lonely, etc. Listen to a poem and ask yourself… • How did this author feel when he/she wrote this poem?
What creates the feeling? • You may have thought the author felt sad. • What words did the author use to create the feeling of sadness? • Tears ran down her face. • He walked with his head hanging low. • Read the poem again and find the feeling in the poem.
Poems bring an image to mind. • Good poetry creates wonderful images. • When you read a poem you should be able to bring a picture up in your mind. • What image does this poem bring to your mind? • Draw a picture of the image.
Poems bring an image to mind. • Good poetry creates wonderful images. • When you read a poem you should be able to bring a picture up in your mind. • What image does this poem bring to mind? • Draw a picture of the image.
What words created the image? • When you read the poem again compare your picture to the words in the poem. • What words did you attend to that helped you draw your picture? • Write those words under your picture.
Poems have a rhythm. • Poems have a beat. A poem can be fast, slow, smooth or even bumpy when you read it. • The words create the rhythm. • Listen to the poem. What is the rhythm?
How did the words create the beat? • Words sound different alone and when they are combined with other words. • Popcorn is a bumpy word. Your voice bumps up and down on this word. • Slip is a smooth word. Your voice slides as it says this word.
Combining words will make the poem “sing” • If I write big, puffy, popcorn ball the sentence bumps up and down. • If I write slip, slide on icy slopes the words slide together smoothly.
Combining words that rhyme creates another rhythm in a poem. Twiggly, wiggly Creepy tree, Make a tree house Just for me. Yappy, snappy Growling dog, You will be A friendly frog.
What kind of poem can you make? • Is it funny? • Is it sad?Did you make me see something? • Could it be a song? • Can more than one person read it?
Poems come in many structures. • Haikus • Cinquains • Free verse • Limmerick • Acroustic • Etc.
