Site Visit Information • San Marcos • Virtualized over 100 apps • 5 Year investment approximately 240k • One staff member fully dedicated • Still maintaining physical PCs replacement on a 4 year plan • Dominguez Hills • Latest CSU to deploy a virtual lab of 160 thin clients • Planning to replace all lab computers with VDI • Chose to do full desktop virtualization • Common perspective … Value is in providing student access to campus software anywhere from any device
Working Group Meeting • With information available – members expressed an overall caution pending more information • Interested in identifying specific applications that could be delivered in the environment • Dean Kelly to ask for application recommendations from Deans meeting • Student representatives to provide input on desired apps • Key issue - limitations for graphic intensive computing • Poll of members in attendance found that the majority were in favor of obtaining more information before deciding whether we should move forward • General recognition that this is the future direction
Action Items for 2014/15 • Compile list of possible applications from faculty and student input • Validate licensing costs and compliance for lab software to determine what can be virtualized • Investigate hardware costs especially for storage (cloud & onsite ) • Existing VDI (2 year old) pilot environment needs to be moved to new storage & possibly rebuilt
