Surveying • “would like more direction” • “I wish that we could find a way to make white Tuesdays more meaningful ” • “I wish the goals of the advisor program were more clear” • “I wish I had more training” • “[It’s] hard for me to be as available for my advisees as others are”
TALKING ABOUT ADVISING AT ASHEVILLE SCHOOL
PURPOSE: Creating a space to talk with each other about our roles as advisors • GOALS: • To move toward a shared understanding of what it means to be “a good advisor” • To have a chance to help each other in this aspect of professional lives by exchanging ideas, feedback, and support
REMEMBERING • Describe a time when you saw an advisor do something and thought to yourself, “That’s a good advisor,” or “That’s good advising.” • Try to name or identify what it was you admired in this interaction, incident, or event. • Please don’t name the advisor here. • New to advising? Use a memory from a teaching or mentoring interaction.
SHARING • Summarize your story for your group. Include your ideas about what you found special or valuable. • Once each person has shared, identify a set of words/phrases/descriptors that encompass all the values your group named. • Aim to boil it down to three to six ideas. • Record these on the giant Post-It.
RECORDING • ONCE EACH PERSON HAS SHARED, IDENTIFY A SET OF WORDS/PHRASES/DESCRIPTORS THAT ENCOMPASS ALL THE VALUES YOUR GROUP NAMED. • *AIM FOR THREE TO SIX IDEAS HERE: PERHAPS YOUR GROUP NAMES FIVE DISTINCT VALUES; PERHAPS SOME STORIES HINT AT MORE THAN ONE; PERHAPS YOU FIND THAT YOU CAN GROUP SOME IDEAS TOGETHER UNDER A COMMON THEME. USE THE GIANT POST-IT NOTE TO RECORD THESE IDEAS.
Wrapping up “advocate, confidante, resource person, mentor, coach, and parent figure” “write periodic reports home” “distribute advisee grades”
