Steps to Writing a Research Paper/Report • Step 1: Pick A Topic • Step 2: Do your research and notecards • Step 3: Make an outlining using two column notes
Step 1: • What is your topic? • Do you have your research gathered? (Use at least 3-5 sources)
Step 2: • You have found tons of wonderful research! What do you do with it?
I Informational Notecards
Step 3: Outlining/Notes • Always plan/outline before beginning your writing. • Organizing the Research first is key!
First: Review Your Research! Make a List of your top 3-6 pieces of information. Use your notecards to do this! What do you want to make sure you include in your research report/paper? These will be included on the left of your 2 column notes.
Two Column Notes • Get a piece of paper and hot dog fold it in half. That means you fold it the long or tall way. • On the top of your paper, write your topic
What are two-column notes? • Two-column notes are one of many note-taking strategies. The purpose for this strategy is to write notes using headings and subheading to structure the layout of the notes. • Our School, K-12 have adopted 2 column note taking. Learn this method and use it.
Left and Ride of 2 column notes • Major headings are written in the left column • Elaborate on the right column. The elaborations may take the form of bulleted points, summary statements, subheadings, defining statements, new information, or synthesis of prior and new knowledge.
Now What? • Your Notecards are done • Your 2 column Notes are done • You are ready to write your paper! • (Which will be so easy if you did your notecards and 2 column notes!)
By Friday… • Make sure your research is complete • Make sure your notecards are complete • Make sure your two column notes are complete (don’t forget that the introduction and conclusion sections should be BLANK! • This will ensure you are ready to learn how to write your research paper!
Future Research Classes: *Friday, October 4th1-2 (A good Beginning and a good ending) *Monday, September 7th1-2 PM (Writing the body of your paper) *Friday, October 11th 1-2 PM (work cited and Q and A time)
What to mark complete and how to… • Language 3- Composition Unit 3, Lessons 3-4 • 4th Language- Composition Unit 2, Lesson 4 • 5th Language- Composition Unit 2, Lessons 2, 4, and 5 • Language A- Composition Unit 5, Lessons 5-9 To do this, follow the steps below: • log in to the OLS from your student account. • Go to your Progress tab, click on Language Skills (composition) • On the right, click on the Unit list to expand it. • Click on Unit 2 or 5 the research paper or research report • Put your curser in the circle of the lessons stated above to color it in green • Give yourself an hour of attendance time for today in Language skills! Make sure to give more time when the work is done!
