During the process of urbanization in China, shopping malls boomed in city centers. Since 2002, at least eight shopping malls of large scales opened in varies district centers in Shenzhen, a first-line city in China with the same reputation and status as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. This research examines the role of the shopping mall in urban life, especially for the younger generation, by focusing on the MixC, the forerunner shopping mall chain in China. • Major Responsibilities • Conducted Participant Observation in the MixC • Interviewed people in the mall • Collected literature and information on shopping malls in China. • Otto and Gertrude Pollak Grants • from Bryn Mawr College Sociology Department 红红火火的深圳万象城.
