Types of Long Term Health facilities There are different types of long-term care facilities. The type of care a resident needs will determine the type of facility that best suits them. “Nursing Homes” Assisted Living facilities Adult daycare Rehabilitation Hospice
Psychosocial needs: involves social interaction , emotions, intellect and spirituality. • Holistic care: caring for the whole person mind, as well as body. • Cultural Diversity: different groups of people with varied backgrounds living together. • Communication: Interactions with residents are important. “I am here for you” can reassure residents.
Understanding Your Resident • It is important to understand your resident as they transition from their home to a long term care facility.Your resident may experience: • Fear • Anger towards caregivers • Feeling of uselessness • Increased Dependence • Depression and Anxiety
Helping with Transition As heath care providers we can help with this transition by doing the following: • introducing them to other residents in the facility • Giving them schedule • Giving them and family member a tour of the facility • Respecting their rights • Treating them with dignity and respect
Promoting Independence To prevent negative feelings we must encourage residents independence by doing the following • Allow residents to make their own choices • Respect their choices • Give residents support and encouragement • Connect the resident to the outside world • Emotional support • Communicate with the healthcare team
