  1. Wireless LANs Presented by: Jerome Thompson Mei-Lun Huang Liu-Yin Hu Kai-Wing Sum

  2. Table of contents • How wireless LAN works • Products • Benefits • Future

  3. How it works: • Wireless networks is networking devices to one another to transfer data, and communicate with each other. • Networking is done by nodes, and PCI cards.

  4. Hub

  5. Radio Frequency: • RF waves ranges from 2.4 to 2.48 GHz bandwidth. •  Short waves i.e. FM/AM radio, TV, cell phones…

  6. Radio Frequency • Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum • (FHSS) transmission hops from one channel to another channel till one is free. • Divides the 2.4 GHz bandwidth • Direct-Sequence Spread Spectrum. • (DSSS) is a transmission technology used in LAWN transmissions where a data signal at the sending station is combined with a higher data rate bit sequence

  7. Infrared Transmission • Shorter range than RF • More secure • Requires a line of sight • Interruption by sunlight

  8. IEEE 802.11: • IEEE 802.11 sets the standards for wireless networks • Architectures: two options in configuring a network:

  9. Ad-Hoc 1.      Ad-Hoc- constructing a network “on the fly” • No fix points • No structure • Communicates by nodes; all nodes can transmit to other nodes • One master computer/device while others are the slave.

  10. Ad-Hoc

  11. Infrastructure • Fixed network access points with mobile nodes • Access points are connected to landlines to bridge other wireless nodes to wired nodes, similar to cellular networks.

  12. Infrastructure

  13. IEEE 802.11 Layers • Physical (PHY) layer • The PHY actually handles the transmission of data between nodes.

  14. IEEE 802.11 Layers • Medium Access Control (MAC) layer. • The MAC layer set protocols to maintain order when sharing of data. • CSMA/CA • RTS • CTS • CRC • ACK

  15. Wireless LAN Products PCMCIA PCI Card Access Point Router

  16. Application

  17. Features • IEEE 802.11b • Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum(DSSS) • 11Mbps

  18. Wireless LAN Products • PCMCIA Wireless PC Card Compaq WL110 Buffalo WL-PCM-L11 • PCI Card Compaq WL210 Buffalo • Access Point (AP) Compaq WL410 D-Link DWL-900AP • Router SparkLAN WX-5000

  19. PCMCIA Wireless PC Card

  20. Compaq WL110 • Used for enterprise, small or medium business, and home office • 11 Mbps • Secure Internet Access • 128 bit Wired Equivalent Privacy(WEP) encryption

  21. Buffalo WL-PCM-L11 • High speed wireless connection, up to 11 Mbps • Plug and Play installation • Integrated antenna

  22. PCI Card

  23. Compaq WL210 • Extends wireless network to desktops, point of sale, and other non-portable devices • External antenna jack

  24. Buffalo WLI-PCI-OP • Let desktops can use PCMCIA Card • 11 Mbps

  25. Access Point (AP)

  26. Compaq WL410 • Extends the range of cabled Ethernet network, providing easy network access to mobile users and difficult to wire locations • 128-bit Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) encryption • Investment protection • Doubling network capacity • Lower network management costs

  27. D-Link DWL-900AP • Point-to-point bridging capability • With a DHCP server, the DWL-900AP will automatically obtain an IP address. • 128-bit WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) • a USB port is provided for flexibility in configuring the device

  28. Router

  29. Spark LAN WX-5000 • Same function as wired network router • Printer Port • Firewall

  30. The benefits of using wireless network ·Mobility ·Installation Speed and Simplicity ·Installation flexibility ·Reduced Cost –of –Ownership

  31. Mobility LAN systems can provide the user with access to information anywhere in their organization. This mobility supports productivity and service opportunities not possible with wired networks.

  32. Installation Speed and Simplicity • Wireless LAN systems can be installed fast and easy and can eliminate the need to pull cable through walls and ceilings.

  33. Installation flexibility Wireless technology allows the network to go where wire can’t go.

  34. Reduced Cost –of –Ownership While the initial investment required for wireless LAN hardware can be higher than the cost of wired LAN, overall installation expenses and life-cycle costs can be significantly lower. Long-term cost benefits are greatest in dynamic environments requiring frequent moves and changes.

  35. Wireless LAN in your industry Corporate: Corporate employees can take advantage of mobile networking for e-mail, file sharing, and web browsing regardless of where you are in the office or outside the building.  Education: Enable users with notebook computers to connect to the university network for collaborative class discussions and to the Internet for e-mail and web browsing.  Manufacturing & Warehouse: Link factory floor workstations and data collection devices to a company’s network. Improve inventory tracking and reduce the costs of physical inventory counts.

  36. The Future of wireless LAN Many companies have invest Wireless LAN market Price come down Small and Home business grow up fast Home networking will be popular

  37. Many companies have invest • A lot of companies have begun to invest about the wireless networking, such as Intel , Microsoft , IBM etc. • Microsoft built wireless support into the successor to windows 9x, NT and later version.

  38. Wireless LAN Market • The wireless data rate, for instance, is a scorching fast 11 Mbps, up to 10 times faster than the most popular home networking products. • It is more fit on the most business, such as transfer data, communication and Net meeting.

  39. Price come down • When the supply of the wireless network device become greater than the demand, user can spend a low price and get more effective device.

  40. Home and small business grow up fast • When the price of the wireless LANs devices are going to be more user affordable, then small and home business wireless networking will become more popular.

  41. Home networking increasing • Market research firm Yankee Group predicts that wireless LANs will make up a quarter of home networks by 2003.

  42. The End
