[Developed in November 1997 with yearly updates] FOREWORD Ohio School Design Manual 4-1-04 Ohio School Facilities Commission 0100 – 1 Welcome to the Ohio School Design Manual (OSDM) 2004 update. The OSDM is an unparalleled design tool for primary and secondary building construction. It is meant to be a forward-looking, dynamic tool to be used by Ohio’s design professionals, school administrators, staff, and students as we design Ohio’s next generation of schools. Of the many benefits the Design Manual offers, none is more important than the framework it provides to make certain our primary goal of quality construction is achieved. The Design Manual provides for flexibility and local choice. Each district, working with their locally selected design professional, can design facilities that are best for their community and achieve their own goals for educational programming. Material selection is not rigidly structured, thus permitting designs to reflect and enhance the neighborhood context. All materials and systems, however, have been carefully selected based on their life cycle cost in recognition of the fact that the Ohio taxpayer ultimately pays both the initial cost of construction and the ongoing cost to operate the facilities. The goal is to maximize the benefit of every dollar invested in an Ohio School Facilities Commission funded project. As you work with the Design Manual, keep in mind that your comments and input are always welcome. Sincerely, Ohio School Facilities Commission Mary Lynn Readey Executive Director
