CHANDRAYAAN-1 India’s 1st Unmanned Mission to Moon Earth - seen from Moon’s Orbit by TMC 25 March 2009 New findings on Lunar topography • Data reveals lunar crustal evolution • HySI - M3 - TMC combined data reveals presence of crystalline anorthosites in several lunar highland regions • Provide credence to lunar magma hypothesis - not proved earlier Launched on : Oct 22, 2008 Lunar orbit insertion : Nov 08, 2008 Moon Impact Probe release: Nov 14, 2008 Instruments Performance • TMC & HySI - 70% AOI covered • LLRI & M3 - Important areas covered • HeX & CiXS - Results awaited • RADOM - Completed the experiments • MiniSAR- Covered both the Poles • SARA- Good data received • SIR 2 -Good data received • MIP - Objectives accomplished ‘Jawahar Sthal’ - MIP Landing site
Interesting results from Chandrayaan-1 Data obtained by the Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) on board Chandrayaan-1, jointly analyzed by ISRO and NASA scientists, led to detection of Hydroxyl (OH) and Water (H2O) molecule on lunar surface rocks & soils. This is major discovery in Planetary Science and has tremendous implications in planning future long-term lunar and planetary exploration.
