  5. Craven • Characterized by fear • A coward

  6. Adjectives • Adjectives are words that describe a person, place, or thing. • “A”, “An”, and “The” are called articles. They are the most commonly used adjectives. • You will always find adjectives directly before or after a noun. • Example: Good books are hard to find.

American Gothicism • Aka “Gothic horror” or “Dark Romance” • Explored themes of terror, superstition, mystery, madness, death, decay, supernatural • Stock characters include tyrants, villains, bandits, maniacs, sleuths, persecuted maidens, adventuring heroes, femme fatale, werewolves, monsters, demons, vampires, ghosts, the Devil

  13. Because Gothicism deals with melodrama, or exaggerated emotion, it often results in parody or satire (stories used to make fun of, mock, tease, or comment on something else)
