Tech Reasons National Association for the Gifted, 2000 State Board Educator Certification (SBEC), 2001 Texas Education Agency (TEA), 2009 • Hyperlinks to related subject matter help build comprehension • Hypertext access to different types of texts (expository, narrative, reference, fiction) • Promotes opportunities to practice different reading strategies. • Learning experiences that provide students with the skills they need for today’s world • Through trial and error, youth add new media skills to their repertoire Why do we need a program like this?
First Steps to Building the Club • Submit a proposal to principal • Chose a book, day, time, and place • Find funding, purchase books • Create an application and spread the word • Find activities online to supplement book, create a timeline for activities • Decide on end product-Digital Media Contest (1st semester) • Build a webpage and blog
Recruitment • Posters around school • Morning announcements • Personal contact in class, lunch, and library • Video can be shown for a peer perspective
Things We Learned/Challenges • Recruitment of members • Blogging- Unwanted participants • Kids not blogging on their own • Unsupportive parents • Competing with other afterschool events • Losing club members to rezoning of schools • Funding for books • How to make use of blogging tools like pre-scheduling posts
Grants • In 2011-2012, we were awarded over $3000 from the Copperas Cove Education Foundation to help fund books, zip drives, T-Shirts, and a trip to Medieval Times in Dallas to support the theme of our book.
