  2. There are 2 options:- • Computer Education • 4 credit major • Usually completed over grades 8 - 12 • CAT (Computer Applications Technology) • 3 credit major • Only grades 10 - 12 BOTH are approved non-pace courses On Academic Projection - just state course and service provider

  3. Computer Education • See Principal’s Circular 28 of 2005 • Made up of compulsory modules and electives

Computer Education • Compulsory modules = 2 credits • 20 specifiedSkillspro (Microsoft) modules OR • 7 Basic ICDL exams These compulsory modules give students a good foundation in computer software skills and should be compulsory for every student. These skills are a requirement for students going to university or looking for employment in the marketplace.

  5. Computer Education • Elective or optional modules = 2 credits • Consists of a wide range of options • Eg. Web page design, A+, Corel Draw, CAD, Pastel accounting, and Visual Basic programming • One of which is an option of a further 21 Skillspro (Microsoft) modules, of which a student must do 16.

Computer Education • Skillspro is a curriculum which takes all the MS Office packages and teaches people how to use them, from a beginner to an advanced level • The subject matter has been divided into modules with various assessments, which results in a SAQA-accredited certificate here in SA • The Skillspro manuals cover both theory and practice and are updated regularly to the latest version of MS Office available.

Computer Education • When choosing Skillspro (Microsoft) modules: • Planned so that students complete 8 modules per year • Doing 2 contact hours per week during school hours • Completing practical activities, a self test and final summative assessment • On successful completion of 8 modules a SAQA-accredited certificate and Statement of Results (SoR) are issued • Copies of these certificates and SoR’s are submitted to ACE Graduation Dept. when applying for the College Entrance Certificate

  9. Computer Education • Students usually start in grade 8 (some schools grade 7) • Planned so that students finish all 36 modules by the middle of grade 12 • Only in certain circumstances can students do more than 1 course of 8 modules per year – and there is a cost involved

Computer Education • Courses are made up of contact hours and notional hours • Contact hours are the hours spent with a lecturer or facilitator working through the information and skills • Notional hours are the number of hours the average person takes to master the required knowledge and skills • 1 credit consists of 20 - 40 contact hours and 200 – 400 notional hours Note: This is why students must allow enough time to complete courses properly.

CAT(Computer Applications Technology) • Is a 3 credit major • Undertaken by students in grades 10 – 12 • There are 2 routes students can go:- • CEC (College Entrance Certificate) issued by ACE • Requires 12 scores per grade verified by the service provider • NSC (National Senior Certificate) issued by Department of Education • Includes an external examination written through SACAI or the Dept. of Education, as well as the required theory and practical exams and SBA • More information on the CAT options is contained in Circular 62/2012

Service Providers • Their role is to provide quality assurance and to keep the standards • ACE requires schools to use approved service providers - preferably registered with SAQA • For example, Skillspro Futurekids and ITSI • They manage the necessary requirements to be met in order for a student to be successful • They oversee the whole course and undertake moderation

Pitfalls • Students change majors very late and think they can rush through the whole course in one year • Students should finish in good time in grade 12 for their certificates and SoR’s to be processed, so there are no delays in issuing their graduation certificate from ACE • Schools and students must make sure they meet ALL the requirements

Notes: • Home Schoolers must be tested by someone outside the home, eg. a teacher at a full school which uses Skillspro • Teachers need to have IT qualifications and be trained as Assessors • Skillspro Futurekids facilitates and supports both the 4-credit Computer Education major and the 3-credit CAT major.
