  2. Conditions • Cooperative client • Warm hand - rub or massage • Light (same as to read) • Clean place to lay out supplies

  3. Universal Precautions • Lead equipment should not be used for other tests. • All lead equipment should be kept in a dust-proof container. • Try to avoid touching equipment when transferring it into the dust-proof container. • Use powder free gloves (or be sure to rid gloves from any powder). • Wash hands before and after procedure!

  5. Supplies Required • Latex or Vinyl gloves (2) • Alcohol on cotton, Alcohol Prep, acetone, soap, or hand sanitizer • Lancet – retractable • Sharps container • Collection device • Trash container

  6. Supplies Good to Have • Table cover • Band Aid, cotton ball, or 2x2 gauze • Clean surfaces – Lysol, Clorox, etc • Clean up packet not necessary

  7. Steps • Clean work area – cover if possible • Supplies available – remove cap from microvette tube • Gloves • Clean clients finger – can reuse cotton • Stick – side of finger pad– press firmly • Lancet in sharps container • Collect blood in tube and cap – place in safe area • Stop bleeding – if any • Clean area

  8. Safety Concerns • If you have an accidental stick with the used lancet – follow employer’s policy. • You have only a few hours to get medication into your mouth. • Transport and dispose of sharps container according to employer’s policy.
