NGN Architecture and Protocols Overview of TIA IP Compendium Document TIA Standards and Technology (S&T) Department: http://www.tiaonline.org/standards/
Overview • The compendium summarizes direct or ancillary IP-related work activity within TIA, either published or currently being developed. • Including high-speed access, interworking, terminal or infrastructure standards that facilitate IP-based services and related wideband/broadband deployment. • Overall, IP-related technical work is mainly being developed under: • TR-30 (Facsimile Terminal Equipment and Systems), TR-34 (Satellite Equipment and Systems), TR-41 (User Premises Telecommunications Requirements), TR-42 (User Premises Telecommunications Infrastructure) and TR-45 (Mobile and Personal Communications Systems) Engineering Committees (TRs) and their Subcommittees and Working Groups. Additionally, Project MESA is indicating the importance of next generation technologies (including IPv4 and v6 functionality). • Specifically regarding this GTSC Agenda Item, technical work is being addressed in TR-30, TR-41, TR-42 and TR-45 LAES Ad-Hoc. GSC-8, OTTAWA
TIA TR-30 Engineering Committee, Facsimile Terminal Equipment and Systems • TR-30 is actively working on IP-based voice band modem technology (i.e., MoIP and ToIP) • Including the control, maintenance, error-control, security and line signal aspects of data modems and text telephony modems. • TR-30 regularly inputs to national and international standards bodies and work related to modem development. • I.e., ITU-T SG 16 involving mechanisms to support the transport of voice-band modem data over IP networks and the development of a global standard for the transport of legacy TDD/TTY signals over IP networks. • Facsimile on the Internet is another area of development. • Includes the exchange of facsimile images. • Work in this area resulted in contributions to the ITU-T, which became part of ITU-T Recommendation T.38, "Procedures for Real Time Group 3 Facsimile Communication over IP Networks" and Recommendation T.37, "Procedures for the Transfer of Facsimile Data via Store and Forward on the Internet." • Contributions have also been generated within TR-30 for the support of ITU-T/IETF optional call control methods using SIP/SDP or H.248/MEGACO. GSC-8, OTTAWA
TIA TR-41 Engineering Committee, User Premises Telecommunications Requirements • TR-41 is actively involved with several IP-related areas: • Multiline Terminal Systems. • End-to-end voice quality in IP networks. • Analog and Digital Wireline Terminals. • Transmission Requirements for Narrowband VoIP and VoPCM Digital Wireline Telephones. • Includes handset, headset and handsfree audio performance, IP-based interfaces, PCM-based interfaces with codecs up to 64 kbits/second and QoS aspects involving VoIP. • Transmission Requirements for Wideband Digital Wireline Telephones. • Applicable to IP and PCM. • IP Telephony Gateways and Infrastructures. • Voice Gateway Transmission Requirements. • Stand-alone IP transmission standard for telephony systems specifically involving Voice Gateways. • Also involves performance and technical criteria for interfacing and connecting with various elements of public and private telecommunications networks and addresses impairments such as echo, noise, and distortion. GSC-8, OTTAWA
TIA TR-41 Engineering Committee, User Premises Telecommunications Requirements • IP Telephony Gateways and Infrastructures (con’t). • IP Telephony Support for Emergency Calling Service • Regarding solutions to the problem of locating VoIP terminals relating to E9-1-1 (emergency) services. • Including Location Identification and Callback Procedures for IP Terminals. • Addresses Enterprise Networks (not terminals) connected through gateways and describes new network architecture elements needed to support emergency calling services and the functionality of those new elements. • Performance/Interoperability Requirements for VoIP Telephone Terminals. • Involves defining performance and interoperability requirements for H.323-based VoIP telephones and SIP-related aspects. • IP Telephony Infrastructure Terms and Diagrams • In development—will define common vocabulary, definitions, acronyms and nomenclatures with regard to IP-related documents. • Applicability to international usage is recognized. • IP Telephony Security Framework • This project will address VoIP telephone network security architectural considerations and the threat environment within the CPE/Enterprise space. • Includes authentication, authorization, privacy, and governmental considerations in its scope. TIA TR-42 Engineering Committee, User Premises Telecommunications Infrastructure • TR-42 is actively involved with several IP-related or facilitative areas: • Network Distribution Nodes. • Currently reviewing proposals as a result of IEEE and Fiber Channel work showing clear support for a standard addressing data center facilities. • With primary focus on information technology, including Internet data centers, service distribution nodes and storage area networks. • These areas have been recognized as critical to the deployment of a number of next-generation standards. • The scope will include topologies and performance for fiber, twisted-pair, and coaxial cabling, as well as other aspects of the IT infrastructure that will enable these facilities to rapidly deploy new technologies, such as emerging 10 Gb/s networks. • Requirements will consider the need for flexibility, scalability, reliability and space management. • Telecommunications Copper Cabling Systems. • Involves Category 6 cabling that facilitates advanced services. • Telecommunications Optical Fiber Cabling Systems. • Facilitating additional/advanced component and transmission requirements. • Capable of supporting 10 Gb/s serial transmission. GSC-8, OTTAWA
TIA TR-45 Engineering Committee Ad Hoc, Lawfully Authorized Electronic Surveillance (LAES) • This Ad Hoc group initiated a joint project with ATIS Committee T1, relative to Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA) compliance and refinement of existing standard. • Including requirements specific to individual packet mode technologies. • Also punch list (i.e., additional capabilities) items. • TR-45 welcomes participation by parties with a material interest in packet mode communications involving a broad range of systems and technologies and their interface to the Collection Function.
