  3. The New Deal • Refers to F.D.R.’s policies for ending The Great Depression (Relief, Reform, Recovery) • F.D.R.’s confidence that he could make things better contrasted sharply to Hoover’s failure to do anything effective

  4. F.D.R. • Distant Cousin of Teddy Roosevelt • Born into wealth • Married Teddy’s niece Eleanor (5th cousin)

  5. F.D.R. • Competitive, charming, passionate, confident, likeable, persuasive, optimistic • Suffered from polio and was paralyzed

  11. First Hundred Days: • Between March 9th and June 16th, 1933, Congress passes 15 major acts to meet the countries economic crisis (The First New Deal)

  12. Fireside Chats • Informal talks on the radio that F.D.R. had with the American people to let them know what he was trying to accomplish. Ex. “I assure you that it is safer to keep your money in a reopened bank than under the mattress.”

  13. F.D.R.’s Second Term • Millions of voters owed their jobs, homes, and bank accounts to the New Deal. • By 1936 election, Democratic Membership shifted from mainly white southerners to “New Deal Coalition” of voters (poor farmers, African-Americans, Catholics, Jewish, blue collar workers)

  14. Later… • Popularity weakened due to rise in unemployment in 1937. • Critic John Maynard Keynes argued that the government needed to spend heavily during recession to jump-start economy (Keynesianism) • As a result, F.D.R. asked congress for $3.75 billion for programs such as PWA and WPA

  15. Eleanor Roosevelt • Effective Public Speaker; helped keep F.D.R.’s career alive during the 1920’s while he was recovering from polio • Painfully shy, unglamorous, unfashionable, self-conscious

  16. Eleanor • Prior to Eleanor, first ladies were generally non-political • World renowned columnist, lecturer and crusader

The 3 R’s Relief, Reform, Recovery • Programs gave Americans people hope • Effects still felt today • Financial Reform • Help For Jobless • Relief for Agriculture and Industry • Money must be pumped in, laws must be reformed so money does not disappear, and with that the nation will recover • Relief+Reform=Recovery
