Ancient Competitions The tradition of the Olympic Games runs back to ancient Greece. We know that the first Olympic Games took place in the town of Olympia more than 2700 years ago. There was no war in the country for these five days when sports competition took place. It was a great athletic festival of wrestling, foot-racing, discus throwing and others. The Games were organized and held up to the year of 393. Then, for more than 1700 years nothing more was heard of the Olympiads.
Revival of the Olympics The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896. Pierre de Fredy, Baron de Coubertin, a young French nobleman, had an idea to bring the Olympic Games back to life. Only 12 countries were represented. From that time the Olympics were held more or less regularly. They take place every two years. The Games cannot take place in a country which is at war. They contribute much to the struggle for peace, understanding and trust among peoples.

Olympic mascots The Singapore 2010 Organising Committee unveiled the first Youth Olympic Games mascots on Saturday 21 November 2009: Lyo (pronounced Leo) and Merly. Lyo is short for “Lion of the Youth Olympics”. A sports lover, he is fun-loving and hopes to inspire young people to keep fit and enjoy sport for life. He symbolises young people’s boundless energy, their determination to live life to the fullest and zeal to strive for excellence.
Olympic mascots Merly got her name from “mer” (meaning the sea) and “ly” stands for liveliness and youthfulness. A passionate advocate of environmental protection, Merly believes that everyone has a role to play in working towards a sustainable future. She also wants to encourage young people to play an active role in their communities and promote respect for one another.

Curling and Biathlon Curling is a team sport played by two teams of four players on a rectangular sheet of ice. Its nickname, “The Roaring Game”, originates from the rumbling sound the 44-pound (19.96kg) granite stones make when they travel across the ice. Biathlon combines the power and aggression of cross-country skiing with the precision and calm of marksmanship.
Ice Hockey and Figure skating Do you like figure skating? Do you always follow all contests and championships? Olympic champion Evgeniy Plushenko broke his own official world record set in Torino, having gained 91.30 points at the European Figure Skating Championships 2010 in Tallinn. Performing with his lucky number 21, Evgeniy left all other competitors far behind. If history is any barometer, one of seven teams will win Olympic gold – Canada, Russia, Sweden, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Finland, and United States. These nations have captured every Olympic and World Championship gold since 1920.
Olympic Sochi The citizens of Russia are proud to held XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. The 2014 Olympic Winter Games will be the first time that the Russian Federation will have hosted the Winter Games. Sochi was elected on 4 July 2007 by the members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Guatemala City.
Sochi 2014 The Games will be organized in two clusters: a coastal cluster for ice events in Sochi, and a mountain cluster located in the Krasnaya Polyana Mountains. This will make it one of the most compact Games ever, with around 30 minutes travel time from the coastal to mountain cluster. The Sochi Olympic Park will be built along the Black Sea coast in the Imeretinskaya Valley, where all the ice venues such as the Bolshoi Ice Palace, the Maly Ice Palace, the Olympic Oval, the Sochi Olympic Skating Centre, the Olympic Curling Centre, the Central Stadium, the Main Olympic Village and the International Broadcast Centre and Main Press Centre, will be built anew for the 2014 Games. The Park will ensure a very compact concept with an average distance of 6km between the Olympic Village and the other coastal venues.

A letter to the champion Dear Evgeniy, My name is Nataly. I am 15 years old and I’m your greatest fan. I think you are the best skater I’ve ever seen! The thing I like most about you is your fourfold tulup and the way you do it. If you ever come to Sochi I hope you’ll come to see me . We could meet and talk about whatever you like. Then you could answer the one question I’ve always wanted to ask you how do you concentrate before competitions? I believe the best victory is the self-conquest. I know you get a lot of letters from fans but just please answer me. Yours Nataly.
