Because air has mass, it also has other properties, including density and pressure. • Density: An objects mass per unit of volume (or how compact an object is) • Pressure: The force pushing on an area or surface ** Denser air will exert more pressure than less dense air **
Why doesn't air pressure crush us? • Because we have air inside pushing out.
Air Pressure • Air Pressure :The result of the weight of a column of air pushing down on an area • Units = mB (millibars)
Why don’t we feel the air pressure around us ????? • Air pressure is omnidirectional, or the molecules in air are pushing in all directions
Measuring Air Pressure • Barometer: The instrument used to measure changes in air pressure
2 Types of Barometers: • 1.) Mercury Barometer ( glass tube open @ the bottom end and partially filled with mercury, when air pressure increases, the mercury would rise)
2 Types of Barometers • 2.) Aneroid Barometer (an airtight metal chamber that is sensitive to changes in air pressure- when pressure drops- the shape of the container determines the air pressure)
What happens to air pressure when the altitude is increased???? • Altitude: or elevation, the distance above sea level • **Air pressure decreases as altitude increases**
What happens to air pressure when the altitude is increased???? As air pressure decreases, so does density….. (less dense air has fewer oxygen molecules per cubic meter – why one will get out of breath quickly)
???????Question ??????? Why do you think the United States Olympic Training Center is located in the mountains (high elevation) of Colorado???
Factors Effecting Air pressure • Temperature: • As air heats it expands, becomes less dense and exerts less pressure. • As air cools it contracts, becomes more dense and exerts more pressure.
Factors Effecting Air pressure • WARM AIR ---- LOW PRESSURE • COLD AIR ---- HIGH PRESSURE
Humidity and Air Pressure • Air containing a lot of water vapor has a lower pressure then dry air. • For water vapor to get into air it must take the place of some of the other molecules in air.
Humidity and Air Pressure • The more water vapor in air the lighter it is. • This results in air that is less dense and exerts less pressure.
