Happy Fathers’ Day Teammates June 16, 2019 Lee Bennett
What is expected of a father/dad? • Name as many qualities as you can think of around your table and then try to rank them in importance. Have someone write them down and appoint a spokesperson to report back to the whole group.
Feedback time • The qualities/responsibilities of a father/dad
The 5 (edited) duties of every dadDave Willis • 1.-Live a life worthy of imitating • 2.-Love their mom/your wife • 3.-Discipline them • 4.-Love them unconditionally • 5.-Follow the only perfect FATHER
1.-Live a life worth imitating • “I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.” Eph. 4:1 • Attitude check; actions; “keep short accounts with God and with family/people” I Jn. 1:9; integrity not perfection
2.-Love their mom/your wife • “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her.” Eph. 5:25 • Providing protection and security, a model for your sons on how to treat a woman; a model for your daughters on what it means to be loved and cared for.
3.-Discipline them • “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that come from the Lord.” Eph. 6:4 • Not just spankings, reprimands, or time-outs, but giving consistent guidelines, and positive affirmations (the Five Love Languages)
4.-Love (agape) them unconditionally • “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” I Pet. 4:8 • Not based on performance or favoritism or comparison with siblings. “They are not perfect, and neither are you, but love is perfect, so show your love as often as you can.”-Dave Willis
5.-Follow the only Perfect Father • “Choose this day whom you will serve…But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15 • “Our heavenly Father models unconditional love for us and then calls us to do the same for our kids. The more you (respond) to His love, the more capacity He will give you to love your family. When you blow it, own it.” Dave Willis
Table talk #2 • Which of these 5 “duties” comes easiest for you as a father? (Wives are free to help here.) • Which of these is most difficult for you to practice or to keep balanced? In terms of discipline, for example, some of us are too lenient and some too strict. Do you treat your grandchildren the same as you did your children?
Wrap Up • Fact: any normal teenaged boy can father a child. How long would it take him to learn to be a father/dad? • Roles and responsibilities of a father are for adults who are mature enough to sacrifice their own ambitions and interests for the good of their wives and children.
Closing • Jesus told His followers, “Remain in Jerusalem until you are clothed with power from on high.” How could any husband expect to care for his wife and successfully father his children unless he knows the Lord and is faithfully walking in His Spirit drawing on His power? • Song: “You’re a good, good Father.” Chris Tomlin • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfJrxvVnmkE
