ראש השנה has four names • Yom Hadin – Day of Judgement • Rosh Hashanah – The beginning of the year • Yom Hazikaron – Day of Rememberance • Yom Teruah – Day of Shofar blasts
Yom Hadin • We focus on three things: • תְשׁוּבָה • תְפִלָּה • צְדָקָה Why these three?
ראש השנה • We want to start the year off on the right foot • Simanim – signs • What are they for??? And of course…
Yom Hazikaron • The Torah reading begins with Avraham and Sarah being told they will have a child on the first day and ends with the Akeidah on the second day.
Yom Teruah • Quick halachot of Shofar • Kosher animal • Preferably Ram – Akeida • Must be whole – no holes • Hear it directly • Brachot – לִשְׁמוֹעַ קוֹל שׁוֹפָר • שֶׁהֶחֱיָנוּ • NO TALKING!! • Not on Shabbat –worried about carrying • Hear 100 kolot
How to get to 100 • תְּקִיעָה – 1 long • שְׁבָרִים – 3 • תְּרוּעָה – 9 short • Different types of crying • We’re not sure what a “תְּרוּעָה“ is • We sandwich the sounds between תְּקִיעָה • The תְּקִיעָה must be as long as the sound in the middle • Shevarim Teruah is the longest
Nightly Greetings • First night only • Male - לשנה טובה תכתב ותחתם • Female - לשנה טובה תכתבי ותחתמי
ראש השנהDavening • Longest Mussaf of the year • Malchiyot • We say Hashem is our king • Zichronot • We talk about Hashem remembering us • Shofrot • We talk about times where the Shofar has been important • Each section contains 10 pesukim • More additions
תשליך • וְתַשְׁלִיךְ בִּמְצֻלוֹת יָם כָּל חַטֹּאתָם • Usually first day of Rosh Hashanah • Not this year!! • Done by a body of water • Place kings were annointed • Can be done until Hoshana Rabbah • Don’t live close to water • Difficult to get there • Lashon harah will be there
Mr. Met wishes you a Shana Tova! Stay tuned for the Asseret Y’mei Teshuva, Yom Kippur and Succot!
