DEFRA’s 2030 adapted coastal area

DEFRA in the UK is conducting a climate change risk assessment for coastal areas. Explore the challenges, uncertainties, and lessons learned in adapting communities to climate impacts, focusing on resilience and sustainability. Discover the need for coordinated adaptive strategies and the potential for adaptation to enhance mitigation efforts.

  1. DEFRA’s 2030 adapted coastal area

  2. Here in the UK, DEFRA are conducting a climate change risk assessment to support this process

  3. Just a reminder that we will not be the most vulnerable communities in the UK

  4. A key challenge… Uncertainties on timing and severity of climate impacts are large, and we have always engineered communities to be somewhat resilient to change, so there is significant investment risk for adaptive designs

  5. Lessons from experience… • Resilience is not sustainability, but they are linked • We should focus on loss of services, amenities and welfare, not only assets • Coordination adaptive strategies are needed across spatial scales • Adaptation can lead to increased need for mitigation if we are not careful • But by being careful, adaptation can lead to improved mitigation
