  1. What was Gaza 2014 about?

  2. American Decline: Situating the Middle East

  3. When the Middle East's biggest problems were about conflict between formal governments, the United States had a lot more influence. But today, the Middle East is defined by a shifting, impossibly complicated web of ethno-religious tension, weak and failed states, and ascendant terrorist organizations. The collapse of central governments and rise of powerful non-state actors breed problems that foreign powers, even the world's only superpower, simply cannot address. The United States can't arrest the region's transformation. The best America can hope to do is manage its consequences

  4. Gaza

  5. Understanding the Gaza Crisis: • The Gaza Strip used to be part of Egypt, and is separate from the West Bank • Gaza is among the most densely populated places in the world • Israel used to have troops and settlers inside Gaza • Hamas is part of an international Islamist movement and doesn't recognize Israel • Hamas was democratically elected by Palestinians • Hamas isn't the only militant group in the Gaza strip, they've all shot rockets into Israel • Israel blockades Gaza, which creates a humanitarian crisis • Israel and Hamas have fought multiple wars over Gaza • Hamas also gets rockets from Iran • Tunnels into Gaza are important — and controversial • Egypt controls the only above-ground crossing into Gaza that isn't Israeli
