GBIF Country Pages – the Europeanperspective • The process: - Focal Nodes Group suggested and organized: Hulda Gideon – Africa; NN – Asia; Beth Mantle – Oceania; manuel Fernando Vargas – Latin America; David Shorthouse – North America - Objective presented: 46 wireframe headlines issued were reduced into 14 questions asked. 22 nodes approached, 8 responded – answers summarized and reported back - Prioritization exercise. 28 specific questions asked. Answers summarized and reported back.

GBIF Country Pages – the Europeanperspective • Development towards the new portal has unfortunately fallen behind schedule.  This is in part due to tasks taking longer than expected, and in part to fewer Secretariat software developers due to the reduction in GBIF funding; staff who have left have not been replaced and no funds currently exist to issue contracts.

GBIF Country Pages – the Europeanperspective • The 2012/13 WP developments relating to the portal primarily target the following areas: • Supporting unlimited record downloads, which are restricted to a 250,000 record limit in the current data portal [1] • Reducing the time between publishing to global discovery (i.e. data being accessible through the portal) to minutes rather than weeks • Inclusion of the full GBIF Metadata Profile [2] in dataset detail pages • Inclusion of checklist discovery capabilities; as supported by the GBIF Integrated Publishing Toolkit and already prototyped [3] • Improved information representation and metrics for publishers, datasets, [countries and regions (not yet started)] • Improved web services to support external system development • Integration of all communication content currently in www.gbif.org, including governance information, capacity/training activities, newsroom and scientific uses of GBIF-mediated data. • Improvements to citation and attribution of data publishers • Enhancing the quality of content through better interpretation and feedback (e.g. annotations) (not yet started) With the exception of 9. and the country pages, development is underway on all other sections. Thanks to all of your contributions, the requirements for the country pages are now relatively well understood, and what remains is for development work to bring them into reality.

  9. GBIF Country Pages – the Europeanperspective • The focal Nodes group is invited to stay involved in following the progress on the development of the country pages between now and GB20. This would involve an invitation to attend around 3 conference calls in which we will have demonstrations from the development team of their progress and invite feedback on any specific issues that arise during the implementation phase.

GBIF Country Pages – the Europeanperspective • Timeline: • During March, the checklist, names, occurrence and newsroom sections of the portal will be demonstrated to GBIF secretariat staff. • You are invited to a conference call in early April (please indicate your interest in participating using the following doodle link: http://doodle.com/y4rfskbuzmyxyu8a),  where this will be demonstrated to you and made available for you to try. The objective of this call will be to show you how the country pages will fit in with the rest of the new portal to give you an indication of what to expect from the country page development, and to ask for any immediate feedback. • From mid April, development will start on the implementation of the country pages • In mid May (week 13-17 May), you will be invited to a conference call to demonstrate the state of progress towards the country page implementation.  Subsequent demonstrations will be arranged based on progress to this date. • At GB20 (October), members of the group attending the Global Nodes Meeting will be invited to make a presentation about the process of designing and implementing the country pages. The Secretariat will of course provide further information and support materials for this and will be on hand to help with answering questions.
