X4Q Project Patients with kidney failure in border counties have multiple specific disadvantages: • Regional specialist services are remote; • Transport infrastructure is generally poor; • General measures of poverty and disability are higher than average.
X4Q Project • In 1999, CAWT convened a group of health professionals from 3 dialysis units adjacent to the border. • This group researched the demography of the region and current provision of renal services. • The results of this research defined the potential for a strategic specialty information system to overcome the problems associated with peripherality… • and informed a detailed submission to the INTERREG IIIa Programme of European Structural Funding.
Renal Medicine A well defined specialty with clear quality objectives
Information Technology A suitable tool to support quality improvement in health care in remote regions
INTERREG application successful… • dedicated information system • supporting hardware • project management staff • expanded to all 6 units adjacent to border.
