Define DISASTERUsing The Following Clues : • Any natural or man made phenomena. • Causes serious damage to the property • and the economy of the affected area. • Makes the entire environment totally • catastrophic. • In short, the normal flow of life faces • interruption.

Examples of natural disaster: Cyclone& Tidal surge River erosion Earthquake Cold wave Drought Tornado Flood
Cyclone has so long snatched away millions of lives and the properties worth billions of taka.
Flood is created when sudden flow of water crosses normal limit and swamps the two sides of rivers. Flood causes havoc to houses, roads and crops.
The spiral movement of river and flood are congenial for river erosion. Numerous people living in the riverside areas of Padma, Meghna, Jamuna and Brahmaputra become landless and homeless because of river erosion.
Abnormally low rainfall and excessive evaporation of water from soil during summer season bring drought. Drought causes damage to crops, hampers irrigation and agricultural production seriously.
Cold wave is originated due to violent blow of winter-wind. It brings death to some people.
Earthquake is felt due to sudden commotion on earth and earth surface and different reasons that happen in the inner earth.
Tidal surge originates right under the centre of cyclone. The furious wind velocity swells the agitated sheet of water and transforms it into tidal surge.
Group Work 1. How does the disaster seen in the right hand side picture originate and what damages does it cause? 2. Mention the cause and effect of the disaster shown in the left hand side picture.
