Ballads were often written as songs, much like Beowulf

  3. Ballad Traits Alternating rhymes Tragic or sensational subject material Strong narrative quality (tells a story) Often includes a dialogue between characters Repetition of certain lines/events or a refrain A twist (shift in tone or a surprise ending)
