CDC Youth Risk Behavior Survey • Surveys 9th-12th graders nationally, every two years 1990-2011 • Developed in 1990 to monitor 6 types of risk behaviors: • Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence. • Sexual behaviors that contribute to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV infection. • Alcohol and other drug use. • Tobacco use. • Unhealthy dietary behaviors. • Inadequate physical activity. • (Also monitors the prevalence of obesity and asthma). • Go to www.cdc.gov/yrbss for more information.

Findings: Detroit 2009-2011 • No significant increase in risk behaviors • No significant decrease in risk behaviors • Significantly less likely in 2011 to have had recent sexual activity (or be “sexually active”) than in 2009

Findings: Detroit & Michigan, 2011 • Detroit youth are significantly more likely than Michigan-wide youth to: • Have ever had sex • Have had sex before age 13 • Have more than 4 lifetime partners • Have had sex within 3 months of the survey • Not use the birth control pill • Not have been taught about HIV/AIDS in school • Not have used any method of pregnancy prevention at last sexual encounter • Detroit youth are just as likely as Michigan-wide youth to • Use drugs/alcohol before last sexual encounter • Not have used condoms at last sexual encounter • Not use long-term birth control methods (Depo, IUD, etc.) • Not use condoms + other forms of birth control

C2P® Detroit’s goals: 2012/13 • Increase the number of gay-straight alliances at Detroit schools • Increase availability of basic HIV information for teachers and other school employees • Create a standardized HIV education presentation to be approved by parents and school board • Increase Detroit Public Schools’ communication with parent on how to talk to their kids about HIV and sexuality.
