Appreciating Individual Differences: Self-Concept, Personality, Emotions Team Austria Andy, Dana, Daniel, Danielle, and Tara
Self Esteem • One’s overall self-evaluation • “I feel I am a person of worth, the equal of other people.” • “I feel I do not have much to be proud of.” • A Cross-Cultural Perspective: • Individualistic Cultures – United States, Canada, New Zealand, Netherlands • Focus more on themselves • “me” culture • Collectivist Cultures – Korea, Kenya, Japan • How you feel about yourself is less important then life satisfaction • More important to do your duty and fit into the community • “we” culture
How Good Are You at Self-Monitoring? • I guess I put on a show to impress or entertain others. • In a group of people I am rarely the center of attention. • In different situations and with different people, I often act like very different persons. • I would not change my opinions (or the way I do things) in order to please someone or win their favor. • I have considered being an entertainer. • I have trouble changing my behavior to suit different people and different situations. • At a party I let others keep the jokes and stories going. • I feel a bit awkward in public and do not show up quite as well as I should. • I can look anyone in the eye and tell a lie with a straight face (if for a right end). • I may deceive people by being friendly when I really dislike them.
Scoring Key • Score one point for each of the following answers: 1) T 2) F 3) T 4) F 5) T 6) F 7) F 8) F 9) T 10) T • 1-3: Low self-monitoring • 4-5: Moderately low self-monitoring • 6-7: Moderately high self-monitoring • 8-10: High self-monitoring
Self-Monitoring Observing one’s own behavior and adapting it to the situation. • High Self Monitoring: Adapt to the situation for the sake of public appearances. Responsive to social cues of appropriate behavior. • Low Self Monitoring: Behaviors reflect their own inner states, attitudes and traits no matter the social norms.
Role Play #1 • Friday morning 9am, after a LONG night. • Andy is late for class. • Danielle found out her fiancé currently has four wives. • Dun Dunn Dunnn
Role Play #2 • Tara is late for her group meeting at the library. • Dana just got a ticket for jaywalking while on the sidewalk. Bad CPD
