  2. The SeventiesMagnavox Odyssey – 1st Gaming Console

Description of the Era • The Seventies (1970-1980) were considered the “Me Decade”. “The focus shifted from the social activism of the sixties to social activities for one's own pleasure: drug use, all-night dancing at discotheques and swinging parties (Wikipedia)”. In turn the music and entertainment industry was a driving force for the American culture and fashion. Bell bottom pants, go-go boots, and short skirts were the norm. Topics that were once taboo, were now being acted out on prime time television shows like All in the Family. • It was in the decade that the first gaming console was introduced, the Magnavox Odyssey. The Odyssey was battery powered and was only able to add color by adding colored screens to your actually television screen. The initial game for the Odyssey was a Ping Pong game that is very similar to the later more popular Atari Pong. The odyssey was release for home sales in 1972; this was the same time that Atari Pong was making its debut as an arcade game.

Important Personalities • Richard Milhous Nixon (January 9, 1913 – April 22, 1994) was the thirty-seventh President of the United States, and was the only U.S. President to resign the office and was also the only person to be elected twice to the offices of the presidency and the vice presidency. Elected to the presidency, he served from 1969 to 1974. (Wikipedia) • Henry Alfred Kissinger (born Heinz Alfred Kissinger on May 27, 1923) is a German-born American politician, and 1973 Nobel Peace Prize laureate. He served as National Security Advisor and later concurrently as Secretary of State in the Richard Nixon administration. Kissinger emerged unscathed from the Watergate scandal and maintained his powerful position when Gerald Ford became President. (Wikipedia) • Jesse Jackson - A leader in the civil rights movement who founded PUSH (People United to Save Humanity) in 1971. • Shirley Chisholm - First African-American woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives; ran for the office of President of the United States in 1972. • Benjamin Spock - A pediatrician, author, and social reformer whose permissive philosophy in his influential book, The Common Sense of Baby Care, was blamed for a wide range of social problems in the 1970's.

Important Developments • 1971 - Daniel Ellsberg leaks the Pentagon Papers, massive collection of top-secret government documents, whose publication helps to discredit the Vietnam War policies of the Nixon administration. • January 23, 1973 - Roe vs. Wade - Supreme Court decision legalizes abortion • December 7, 1972 – Apollo 17 launch, the last manned craft to the moon. • August 9, 1974 - Gerald Ford become 38th president after Richard Nixon, facing impeachment charges, is forced to resign.
