Tuning Fork Explorations and Interconnections: Good Vibrations, pg. 201 Pitch and Volume Station Exploration and Interconnections: Good Vibrations, pg. 201 Sound Through Different Mediums Interconnections: The Conduction of Sound, pg. 197 Make A Musical Instrument: Interconnections: Sound Extension, pg. 205
What Makes Sound Objectives and Indicators • Describe how sound is made from vibration and moves in all directions from the source in waves. ILOs • Observe simple events, and report their observations. • Science findings are based on evidence.
What Makes Sound? ENGAGE: Teacher directed sound tube demonstration EXPLORE: Small group activities with tuning forks & salt on a can EXPLAIN: Student developed claims, whole class discussion & LOL ELABORATE/EVALUATE: Student developed explanation for how the sound tube works
Pitch & Volume Objectives and Indicators • Explain the relationship of the size and shape of a vibrating object to the pitch of the sound produced. • Relate the volume of a sound to the amount of energy used to create the vibration of the object producing the sound. ILOs • Describe of explain observations carefully and report with pictures, sentences, and models. • Use data (observations) to construct a reasonable conclusion.
Pitch & Volume ENGAGE:Glass Harp Video EXPLORE: Investigation: How does the length of a vibrating object affect pitch? Small group stations EXPLAIN: Student written conclusions and 3 – flap foldable. ELABORATE/ EVALUATE: Explaining pitch and volume with instruments.
Pitch & Volume SOUND PITCH Pitch is how high or low a sound is. Short, tight vibrating objects make a high pitch. Long, loose vibrating objects make a low pitch. VOLUME • Sound is created by vibrating objects. • Sound travels away from its source in all directions. • Sound travels in waves. • Volume is how loud or soft a sound is. • More energy creates a loud volume. • Less energy creates a soft volume.
Sound Through Different Mediums Objectives and Indicators • Describe the production of sound in terms of vibration of objects that create vibrations in other materials. ILOs • Observe events and report their observations. • Use data to construct a reasonable conclusion.
Sound Through Different Mediums ENGAGE: Sharing experiences talking under water EXPLORE: Small group demonstrations: Coat Hanger, Pencil, Desk EXPLAIN: Student conclusions & class discussion ELABORATE: Reading on pg. 200 EVALUATE: Make and explain a cup telephone
Make a Musical Instrument Objectives and Indicators • Make a musical instrument and report on how it produces sound. ILOs • Solve problems appropriate to grade level by applying science principles and procedures.
Assessments • Problem of the Week • Formative Assessment Probes: • Making Sound
