Science Fair Project By: James Campbell
Purpose • To Figure out if it is possible for to make a flame cool enough to be held in the hand • The science behind why it is possible to hold a flame
Hypothesis • If The material is 100% cotton and it is not completely soaked in fuel it will not combust fast enough because the material is 100% cotton then allowing to sustain a flame that can be held in the hand
Materials • 2" x 5" strip of cotton cloth (like from a t-shirt) • 100% cotton thread • needle • naphtha lighter fluid (e.g., Ronsonol™) • match or lighter
Procedure • Thread the needle with cotton thread. • Tightly roll the cotton strip into a ball. • Pierce the ball with the needle and wrap the ball with the thread. End by running the needle through the ball one more time and break off the thread. • Soak the ball with lighter fluid. Don't soak hands. • Don't ignite the fireball while holding it. Set the ball on a fire-proof surface.
Results • It was possible for the ball to be held but your fingers must be somewhat moist in order for it to not burn
Conclusion • It Is possible to make a hold able fireball as long as the material is 100% cotton and your hands are pre soaked to prevent and burning
Future considerations • If the Experiment were to be done again the material would not be 100% cotton and the ball size would possibleybe reduced.
