Something to Talk About - Review • First 15 minutes: complete recommended exercises • *If you have not signed up for Khan Academy, do so* • Sign up • On home page, click “Coaches” on bottom left • Add class code: AZBMY6
Something to talk about - Review • Explicit vs. Recursive • What’s the difference? • Explicit: names the first term IN the equation • Recursive: Names the term when x = 1 • Uses the PREVIOUS term to name the new term
Something to talk about - review • An EXPLICIT equation has ONE PART • n-1 • First term • common ratio • A RECURSIVE equation has TWO PARTS and a BRACKET
Something to talk about - Review • Explicit and Recursive Formulas: So how do we write them? • Explicit • Start with the first term • What is the change? • If it’s a COMMON DIFFERENCE (adding by the same number) your equation will include addition – it’s LINEAR • Example: RSG 1.1 – 8c
Something to talk about - Review • Explicit and Recursive Formulas: So how do we write them? • Explicit • If it’s a COMMON RATIO (multiplying by the same number), your equation will include MULTIPLICATION AND AN EXPONENT – it’s EXPONENTIAL • Example: RSG 1.1 – 8a
Something to talk about: Review • Recursive: • Find the function when x = 1 • Find the change RELATIVE TO f(x) or y • If it’s a common difference (adding by a constant rate), your second equation will look like: • TERM YOU WANT = PREVIOUS TERM + COMMON DIFFERENCE • Example: RSG 1.1 – 8c
Something to talk about: Review • Recursive: • Find the function when x = 1 • Find the change RELATIVE TO f(x) or y • If it’s a common ratio (multiplying by a constant rate), your second equation will look like: • TERM YOU WANT = PREVIOUS TERM * COMMON RATIO • Example: RSG 1.1 – 8a
Closure: • Submit the closure form on the website by answering the question provided there • TONIGHT’S HW: • Finish any recommended exercises on khan academy you did not finish in class
