The process 1.Plan - 2.Structure - 3.Paper mache!- 4.Let dry - 5.Decorate - Day 1 Day 2 Day 3
1. plan • *Imagine how the finished piñata might look and draw a picture of it – come up with a couple of different designs • *Break your drawings down into shapes • *decide which piñata design you will make and what materials you might need to build each shape
2. Structure *Collect the materials you need to create the basic shape of your piñata *tape extra balloons and cardboard to your piñata's main balloon
3. Paper Mache!! • Cover over your entire Piñata structure with strips of paper, leaving open an area to insert the candy • Take a piece of paper and dip it in the glue tray • Pinch the paper with your fingers and slide them down to get rid of extra glue • Apply the paper to the piñata and smooth it out with your hands – the smoother the better!! • Cover with 2 layers of newspaper, and 2 layers of white paper TIP: Place the layers in criss-crossing directions to add strength!
4. Let dry *support any unstable areas of the piñata with cups or pieces of cardboard – they’ll dry stiff *Let the piñata dry in a cool, dry location where it won’t be bumped around *It will take at least one full night to dry enough to decorate
5. Decorate ! *Pop the balloon with a pin, and remove it! *Using a pencil, poke a hole on each side of the top of the piñata and string a piece of yarn or wire through each. Tie the yarn in a knot to create a loop from which the piñata will hang *Fill the empty piñata with candy *Tape a thin piece of cardboard over the candy hole when finished *Starting from the bottom of the piñata glue pieces of shredded tissue paper to the piñata structure in a spiral pattern
